Asphalt driveway installation is usually done by the professionals from the asphalt contractor, using rollers, asphalt trucks, and other equipment that the asphalt crew needs.

Asphalt installation really is done in three main parts, pre-inspection, the base work that goes under the asphalt, and the actual asphalt layer.

The first phase, pre-inspection, is about assessing what type of work is actually needed, and whether there are some additional things to consider for laying the asphalt.

For example, in cold climates, such as those in Southern Australia during winter, the asphalt manufacturers need to consider that the ground is going to be cold at times and the asphalt could be affected by the temperature of the base under the asphalt layer.

The rock and gravel base under the actual asphalt layer is designed to be the layer that provides firmness and support for the asphalt layer, similarly to what ground work is done to keep houses stable.

Also, the ground work establishes angles to the ground, which will direct, for example, rain water to points where it is collected. Without such ground work, the water would develop pools and deteriorate the quality of the asphalt.

This ground work is done before the asphalt is laid on top of it, typically a day before the asphalt laying work.

The final phase of the installation process is the actual asphalt laying, which is done very quickly, due to the fact that asphalt needs to be laid when its hot.
